What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of shaping your pages so search engines and AI assistants can lift a direct answer from them. It started with featured snippets and voice assistants. Today the answer engines that matter are Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. The method is unchanged: answer first, then prove it.

Definition: Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of writing and structuring content so a search engine or AI assistant can quote it as the direct answer to a question.

What does answer engine optimization mean in practice?

An answer engine is any system that replies with an answer instead of a list of links. Featured snippets were the first common example on Google. AI Overviews and chat assistants are the current ones.

AEO asks one question of every page: if an engine had to quote one passage to answer the searcher, which passage would it be, and is that passage good enough to stand alone? Most pages fail this test. The answer is buried in paragraph four, hedged, or split across a carousel.

Why does AEO matter now?

Answer boxes now appear on far more searches, and on more kinds of searches.

  • Semrush tracked 10 million+ keywords. AI Overviews appeared for 6.49% of keywords in January 2025, 24.61% in July and 15.69% in November 2025.
  • In the same study, 91.3% of queries that triggered an AI Overview were informational in January 2025. By October that share was 57.1%. Commercial and transactional queries now get answers too.
  • Pew found that Google searches phrased as questions produced an AI summary 60% of the time in March 2025. The median summary was 67 words, and 88% cited three or more sources.

That last figure sets the bar. You are competing with two or more other pages for a slot in a 67-word answer.

How is AEO different from GEO and SEO?

SEO AEO GEO
Question it asks Does the page rank? Can an engine lift the answer? Do AI engines name and cite the brand?
Unit of work Site and page Passage Whole footprint, on-site and off-site
Main output Position and clicks Featured snippet, quoted passage Mention and citation in AI answers
Example fix Fix a noindex tag Move the answer to the first paragraph Allow OAI-SearchBot; earn review-site mentions

We treat AEO as one part of generative engine optimization. The comparison with classic search is on GEO vs SEO.

How do you write an answer an engine can lift?

  1. Use the question as the heading. Match how people phrase it: “How long does X take?” beats “Timelines”.
  2. Answer in the first 40 to 60 words below it. No warm-up. The first sentence carries the answer.
  3. Define the term in one sentence. “X is a Y that does Z.” One line is easy to quote whole.
  4. Put a number in it, with a date and a source. Engines and readers both trust a figure they can check.
  5. Use a table for any comparison. Rows are easy to extract and hard to misread.
  6. Add a short FAQ with real questions. Use the phrasing from People Also Ask and from your sales calls.
  7. Keep each passage self-contained. No “as mentioned above”. A quoted paragraph must make sense alone.

Each page takes about 2 hours to rework this way. Start with the 10 pages that answer your category’s core questions.

Does FAQ schema still matter for AEO?

Less than it did. In August 2023 Google said FAQ rich results will only be shown for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. How-to rich results were deprecated the following month. Google’s 2026 guide adds that “there’s no special schema.org markup you need to add” for its AI features (Google Search Central).

So the FAQ content matters and the markup is optional. Other engines may still parse structured data, and Organization or Product schema still helps engines identify who you are. Keep it accurate. Do not expect a rich result from it.

What about voice assistants?

Voice assistants read out one answer, so the same habits apply: one short, direct answer per question, with no table or link needed to make sense of it.

What we check in the Growth Scan

Check Pass Warn Fail
Definition blocks on key pages (Content and Entity) One-sentence definition on every pillar page On some pages None found
FAQ coverage on key pages (Content and Entity) FAQ on home, pricing and top product pages On one of them None
Exactly one H1 (Agent Readiness) One H1 that states the page’s topic One H1, generic text Zero or several H1s
Title length (Agent Readiness) 30 to 60 characters 61 to 70, or under 30 Missing or over 70
Meta description length (Agent Readiness) 70 to 160 characters Outside the range Missing
Which pages get cited (AI Visibility) Your reference pages cited for category prompts Only the homepage cited No page cited

Fixes are small. A missing definition is 30 min per page. A full answer-first rewrite is 2 hours per page.

Questions

What does answer engine optimization mean?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) means writing and structuring content so a search engine or AI assistant can quote it as the direct answer to a question. In practice: put the question in a heading, answer it in 40 to 60 words right below, define the term in one sentence, and back each claim with a dated, sourced number. The engine does the rest.
What is the difference between answer engine optimization and generative engine optimization?
AEO is about the page: is the answer easy to find and lift? Generative engine optimization (GEO) is about the whole footprint: can AI crawlers reach you, do other sites mention you, and do ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity name you for category prompts? A page can be well formatted for AEO and still be missing from AI answers because a crawler is blocked.
Is AEO the same as SEO?
AEO is a layer of SEO, not a separate discipline. Google says optimizing for its generative AI features is still SEO and needs no special markup. AEO adds a writing discipline on top: lead with the answer, keep it short, make each passage stand alone. Those habits also help featured snippets and readers who skim.
Does FAQ schema help with AI answers?
Not in Google's rich results for most sites. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. Google's 2026 guide also says no special schema is needed for its AI features. Keep real FAQ content on the page because people and engines read it. Treat the markup as optional.
How long should an answer be for AEO?
Short enough to quote whole. Pew found the median Google AI summary in March 2025 was 67 words. We write the opening answer on each page in 40 to 60 words, so an engine can lift it without cutting. Detail, caveats and evidence go in the sections below it.
