How AI Citations Work and How to Get Cited by AI
AI engines cite sources when they search the web before answering. The engine runs one or more searches, fetches a handful of pages, writes the answer and attaches links to the passages it used. To get cited, your page must be reachable by the engine’s crawler, retrieved for the question and easy to quote in a sentence or two.
Definition: An AI citation is a link to a source page that an AI engine attaches to its answer to show where a statement came from.
How do AI engines choose what to cite?
Most engines follow the same four steps.
- Expand the question. Google calls this query fan-out: “a set of concurrent, related queries generated by the model” (Google Search Central). One prompt becomes several searches.
- Retrieve. The engine pulls candidate pages from an index. Google uses its Search index. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity each run a search crawler for their search features: OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
- Write. The model drafts the answer from the retrieved text.
- Attach. The engine links each claim to the passage it came from.
The developer docs show how literal step 4 is. In Anthropic’s API, citations are always enabled for web search, and each one carries the URL, the page title and up to 150 characters of cited text. OpenAI’s web search returns a url_citation annotation with the URL, title and location in the answer, and requires apps to make citations “clearly visible and clickable”.
That 150-character figure is worth noticing. Engines cite passages, not pages. A page with one clean, quotable sentence beats a page with the same idea spread over four paragraphs.
Mention vs citation: what is the difference?
| Mention | Citation | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Your brand named in the answer text | A link to your page in the answer or source list |
| Where it comes from | Retrieved pages, or the model’s training data | Retrieved pages only |
| What it does | Puts your name in front of the buyer | Gives the buyer a path to your site |
| How to track | Search the answer text for your brand | Parse the source links |
You want both. A brand can be named without a link, and a page can be linked while a competitor gets named. We track the two separately.
What does the data say about who gets cited?
- Rank helps, less than it did. Ahrefs analyzed 4 million AI Overview URLs. In March 2026, 38% of citations came from pages in the top 10, down from about 76% in July 2025.
- ChatGPT reaches deeper. Semrush found pages cited by ChatGPT search rank in position 21 or lower for related queries almost 90% of the time.
- Off-site mentions matter. Across 75,000 brands, Ahrefs found YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility, about 0.737, and branded web mentions 0.66 to 0.71. Number of site pages: about 0.19.
- Answers cite several sources. Pew found 88% of Google AI summaries cited three or more sources. Government sites made up 6% of AI summary sources, against 2% of standard results.
Do AI citations send traffic?
Not much, per citation. Pew found users clicked a link inside a Google AI summary in 1% of visits. The visits that do come convert well: Semrush found the average AI search visitor 4.4 times as valuable as a traditional organic visitor, measured by conversion rate. Count mentions as exposure, and count the clicks as a bonus.
How do you get cited by AI?
- Let search crawlers in. Allow OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt. (30 min) See agent readiness.
- Put the answer first. A 40 to 60 word answer under each question heading, plus a one-sentence definition. (2 hours per page) See answer engine optimization.
- Add sourced numbers and quotes. In the original GEO study, adding statistics, quotations and source citations were among the best methods, with visibility gains of up to 40%. (2 hours per page)
- Publish pages for buying prompts. Comparisons, alternatives, pricing explainers, definitions. These match what buyers ask engines. (1 week)
- Earn real mentions. Reviews, community answers, YouTube, partner pages. Google warns that inauthentic mentions are not as helpful as they look. (1 month)
- Track it. A fixed prompt set, every engine, three runs per prompt, monthly. (1 day to set up)
For the wider method, see generative engine optimization.
What we check in the Growth Scan
The AI Visibility module runs 10 category prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, three times each.
| Check | Pass | Warn | Fail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand mentioned for category prompts | Named by 3 or 4 of 4 engines | Named by 1 or 2 | Named by none |
| Brand cited with a link | Cited on 3 or more of 10 prompts | Cited on 1 or 2 | Never cited |
| Competitor share of mentions | Among the top 3 brands named | Named, outside the top 3 | Not named |
| Which pages get cited | Reference or product pages cited | Only the homepage cited | No page cited |
| Variance across three runs | Same verdict on all 3 runs | Verdict differs on 1 run | Named on 1 run of 3 only |
| Prompts with 3+ competitor citations and zero for you (Citation Gap) | None | 1 to 3 prompts | 4 or more |
Typical fixes: for each gap prompt, read the competitor page that won and publish a better answer page (1 day per prompt).

Questions
- How do I get my brand cited by AI?
- Make sure AI search crawlers can fetch your pages, then give engines a passage worth quoting: a direct answer in the first 40 to 60 words, a one-sentence definition and numbers with sources. Publish pages that answer your category's buying questions. Earn real mentions on review sites, communities and YouTube. Then track a fixed prompt set across engines every month.
- Why does ChatGPT cite different sources each time?
- Each answer is generated fresh. The engine may run different searches, retrieve a different set of pages and phrase the answer another way. Small changes in wording or timing can change the sources too. That is why one test proves little. We run each prompt three times per engine and report a range.
- Do AI citations bring traffic?
- Some, but less than a blue link used to. Pew found people clicked a link inside a Google AI summary in 1% of visits in March 2025. The traffic that does arrive can be worth more: Semrush measured the average AI search visitor as 4.4 times as valuable as a traditional organic visitor, based on conversion rate. A mention also builds recall without a click.
- Does ranking first on Google mean AI will cite me?
- It helps for Google's own AI features and helps less elsewhere. Ahrefs found 38% of AI Overview citations came from top 10 pages in early 2026, down from about 76% in mid-2025. Semrush found pages cited by ChatGPT search rank 21st or lower for related queries almost 90% of the time. Rank is one input among several.
- How many sources does an AI answer cite?
- Usually several. Pew found that 88% of Google AI summaries in its March 2025 sample cited three or more sources, and only 1% cited one. So you are rarely competing for a single slot. You are competing to be one of three or more, and to be the brand named in the text, not only a link in the source list.
